Dealing with behavioral issues is sometimes tough on families. Families often know something is not right with the actions of their friend or loved one but they do not know where to turn for help.
Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital hosted a Family Series on mental health topics of interest in 2008. Two dealt with Depression and are viewable through the links below, “Depression, Is it Normal Sadness or Beyond Normal?" by Dr. Jeff Mitchell, M.D. and “Depression in Seniors, Depression Later in Life” by Jim McAdams, D.O.
“Is it Normal Sadness or Beyond Normal?”
Signs of Depression Might Include:
• prolonged periods of sadness • overeating or loss of appetite
• helplessness • hopelessness
• sleeping too much or too little • pessimism
• headaches and stomachaches
that cannot be physically pinpointed
can all be signs that someone you know may be dealing with Depression.
Depression is an illness that is responsive to treatment. Many people experience the signs of depression at one point or another. Attendees will learn when to seek treatment, how to ask for it or how to recommend it to a friend or loved one.
“Depression Later in Life”
Alzheimers and other diagnosable illnesses shared by Oklahoma’s aging population include mental illness components. Caring for or worrying about a parent or elderly family can be stressful especially when unusual behaviors start. Some symptoms unique to older adults are specifically related to depression. Attendees will learn how to face options for treatment.

K. Michael Saliba, M.D. helps families decide “Is our Child too Active or Inattentive?” A child who repeatedly dashes around playing with everything in sight, gets bored with a task after only a few minutes or simply cannot wait for their turn may be crying out for help. Those who are easily distracted, forget things, have trouble paying attention in class, or are generally inattentive may need help also.
Saliba helps families gain an understanding of the mental identification of Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder and learn about treatment options.
